More cycling, this time in Spain, along the Ruta de la Plata, an ancient way from north to south of Spain. It was used by the Romans and is still used by pilgrims making their way north to Santiago de Compostella. MORE

The Parador de Salamanca is wonderful, classy, graceful and with the most spectacular views looking over to the old city and the Cathedral, most especially at night when it is all illuminated. MORE
We are definitely into deep Spain, into granite mountain passes and sun burned plains. It's no longer wheat and corn and vines. Now it is cattle and pigs and sheep roaming over a vast wild territory. The little villages and towns are quiet, the bigger towns medieval and fortified. MORE
The ride from Caceres to Zafra was straight south, mostly along the N-630 route which follows the old Ruta de la Plata, up over a high-ish pass and then either level or just straight on down. I made good time, mostly with a benign wind, but toward the end of the day it turned in to a headwind which made the last 20 miles or so hard going. The headwind was a precursor of the stormy and thundery weather that was to come the next day on my ride to Seville. MORE
