I was educated by Augustinian priests at Austin Friars School in Carlisle, and after leaving school joined the Augustinians / Order of Saint Augustine and studied under the auspices of the Augustinians, in Clare in Suffolk, and Dublin in Ireland where I did my novitiate; and then in Birmingham where I took my degree in History at Birmingham University, and then in Rome where I studied Philosophy and Theology at the Gregorian University in preparation for ordination as a priest.
In January 1981 I was ordained a priest. I then lived and worked for some years in Augustinian communities, schools and parishes, in Carlisle, Birmingham and in the USA.
